Fire on Amato Drive on 10/12/2022

MEDIA RELEASE
Structure Fire
October 12, 2022
Just after 1:00 AM, the South Windsor Dispatch Center received multiple 9-1-1 calls for a fire in the building at 24 Amato Drive - Westage Condo Complex - off of Pleasant Valley Road.
Within 4 minutes from time of dispatch, South Windsor Police Department Officers along with multiple SWFD Officers arrived on scene and declared a ‘working fire’. All occupants were reported out of the building, and two of the fire officers began a search to confirm.
There was visible fire from two 2nd floor units extending up to the roof overhang. The fire extended inside those two units and through the roof above the this units. The first arriving fire engine (Engine 4) established a water supply from a hydrant and performed a transitional fire attack, putting water on the fire within minutes from initial 9-1-1 calls. The crews then made a very aggressive interior attack on the fire that certainly limited the fire spread. Their training, dedication, and professionalism without a doubt limited both fire damage and kept the remainder of the occupants safe.
The lower units received smoke and water damage. Thankfully, only two of the four units in that ‘block’ of building were occupied and both occupants escaped on their own without injury. The other eight (😎 units were not involved.
Prior to extinguishing all fire and overhauling, the incident escalated to a 2nd Alarm, plus an additional aerial truck. SWFD had 3 Engines, Tower 1, Rescue 5, Fire/Police 9, Cars 10, 11, 12, 19, 29, and 39 with approximately 25 Company Officers and Firefighters. Crews were supported with mutual at the scene from Manchester Fire Rescue EMS/Professional Firefighters of Manchester/Local 1579 with an Engine (E5), an Aerial Truck (T2), and a Battalion Chief (Car 23); Manchester Fire Department 8th District with (E81 and Car 1) and crews from Broad Brook Fire Department, The Ellington Volunteer Fire Department (CT) and Town of Vernon Fire. Station coverage was provide by Windsor Volunteer Fire Department - CT and Warehouse Point Fire who also responded to a separate, unrelated fire alarm.
Credit to not only our members, but all the members of the mutual aid fire companies, the 9-1-1 Dispatchers, South Windsor Police Officers, and crews from Ambulance Service of Manchester.
