*Construction Incident*
July 15, 2021 @ 2:15 PM
The South Windsor Fire Department along with Ambulance Service of Manchester and South Windsor Police Department were dispatched to the area of Buckland Road and Deming Street for the report of a construction worker pinned underneath a pipe on a construction site.
Cars 29, 10, and 11 responded along with Rescue 5 and Engines 2, 3, and 4. Upon arrival of Police and Fire, the pipe had already been lifted off the patient by construction workers via a chain and an excavator. The patient had originally been working on a system underneath the pipe that broke, approximately 6 feet deep in a trench. Workers had moved the patient out of the deep, compromised area of the trench as emergency services arrived on scene and began to assess and render aid. A second patient was located who injured his hand while removing the pipe from the first patient.
Crews finished removing the patient from the trench and both patients were transported to the hospital. The road was shut down and OSHA was called to the scene. The cause of the incident is under investigation by OSHA.
Sunday April 18, 2021:
Machinery Rescue
Crews responded to Aldi’s distribution center, 295 Rye Street, for a reported person trapped in a large trash compactor. Car 12 and Car 15 responded with Engine 8 and Rescue 5. The patient was located with his foot trapped between a 4x4 constructed pallet and a steel compact plate.
Rescue Squad members went to work to free the patient after ensuring the machine was powered off, locked out and tagged out. The patient was freed approximately 15 minutes later. The patient was injured, but the injuries were non-life threatening.
In recent weeks, SWFD and the Rescue Squad have responded to two finger/hand entrapments, an arm/chest impalement/entrapment, and now this leg/foot entrapment. The Rescue Squad has put in some serious training on machinery rescue, both in-house and with Take The Door Training, and it’s really come through recently on emergencies.
SWFD, along with South Windsor Police Department, Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP), DMV, and Environmental Services Inc. are on the scene of a large garbage truck rollover with a significant fuel leak. The right side of the northbound lane of Route 5 was closed in the area of Chapel Road while crews clean up. There were no injuries.
