April 8, 2020 - Structure Fire
Shortly after 9:40 AM today, the South Windsor Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 410 Burnham Street. Our dispatch center reported multiple 911 calls being received, and a full assignment from the East Hartford Fire Department was added due to the structure’s proximity to the town line.
Car 10 arrived on scene first and observed a heavy fire condition on the second floor of a commercial building. Unknown chemicals were reported just below the fire location, and contributed to a very rapid fire spread. Due to the heavy fire load and spread, defensive operations were initiated as SWFD Engines 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, Tower 1, and Rescue 5 arrived on scene along with several apparatus from East Hartford FD. Engine 5 from Manchester Fire Rescue EMS responded for a RIT team.
IAFF Local S-15 Bradley Airport Fire Fighters were also called to the scene for the use of a dry chemical extinguishing agent on a chemical fire inside the shop. Approximately 50 gallons of foam was also used.
Manchester Fire Department 8th District and Broad Brook Fire Department provided station coverage for the town.
As of 3:30 PM, two fire apparatus are still on scene working to fully extinguish the hotspots.
Approximately 8 people were inside the building when the fire started, and all made it out prior to our arrival. There were no injuries. The South Windsor Fire Marshal's Office is working to determine the cause of the fire.
